Sheldon Iowa — The Sheldon Orabs softball team downed Okoboji 6-4 at Orab Field Wednesday night to get a season split. The Pioneers won the first go round 7-1 in Okoboji back in late May.
Sheldon opened the scoring with a 4-run first inning. Nicole Johnson led off with a double to left field. McKenzie Wagner followed with bunt and reached on a error at first base. Johnson scored on the play and the Orabs were up early 1-0. Tayler Weber reached on an error during a bunt attempt and Nicole Meyer walked to load the bases. Mallory McQueen unloaded a 3-run single to the gap in right-center to clear them off and put the Orabs up 4-0.
Sheldon added a run in the second when Johnson led off with a walk and later scored as Weber reached on an error on a sacrifice bunt attempt to put the Orabs up 5-0.
In the 4th Johnson led off with a single to the left side of the infield. She scored on a ground ball out off the bat of Tayler Weber. That put Sheldon in front 6-0 after four innings.
Okoboji cut the lead in half with a 3-run 6th inning. Back to Back walks to Annie Klatt and Abbie Klatt along with a single by Siera Seeders brought in a pair of runs. Seeders scored on a sacrifice bunt by Jamie Adams.
The Pioneers scored another run in the top of the 7th. Keitra Cabinboy led off with a walk and scored on a fielders choice by Annie Klatt to make the final score Sheldon 6 and Okoboji 4.
Junior Nicole Johnson got the win going 7 innings. She scattered 5 hits, walked 4 and struck out 2. Freshman Abby Klatt went 6 innings in the loss. She gave up 7 hits, walked 3 and struck out 10. With the win Sheldon is 7-10 for the year and 5-6 in the conference. Okoboji is 11-13 for the year and 4-6 in the conference.
Up next for Sheldon will be the Okoboji tournament on Saturday. The Pioneers host Sioux Center Friday before their Saturday tournament.
