Packers Select Iowa Edge Rusher Lukas Van Ness with 13th pick in Round 1 of the NFL Draft

A pair of Hawkeyes and a Cyclone were picked in the first round of the NFL Draft Thursday night in Kansas City.

Hawkeyes Lukas Van Ness went to the Packers with the 13th selection in the first round. Team mate Jack Campbell was taken number 18 overall by the Detroit Lions. Cyclone Will McDonald IV was selected number 15 overall by the Jets. Ironically Van Ness spent time working out with Packers NT Kenny Clark in Thousand Oaks, California

Van Ness was part of a rotation at Iowa. He was asked if it was odd that he didn’t start at Iowa.

He came into college a 220 lb. def. lineman and then put 60 pounds on his frame his freshman season.

Van Ness watched Preston Smith a little last year, but he has really watched a lot of different players at edge rusher.

He’ll be joined in the NFC North by Iowa teammate Jack Campbell who went to the Detroit Lions with the 18th pick.

Hockey was his first love, played all the way thru his senior season in high school where he reached the final four at state. Hockey helped him develop, but he knew football was his real love.

Finally Van Ness with some thoughts on his pass rush game.

Rounds two and three of the draft are set for Friday night with rounds four through seven on Saturday.
