Pitching Leads the Way in NWC Split with (RV) Doane

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – The Northwestern College baseball team (12-14, 4-6 GPAC – old) continued the homestand Saturday afternoon, splitting the Great Plains Athletic Conference (DH) doubleheader with the (RV) Doane Tigers (22-6, 11-1 GPAC), snapping the Tigers 16-game win streak. Brett Shelton picks up the complete game win in Game 1, improving to 3-3 on the season.

GAME 1: Northwestern 3, (RV) Doane 0
Northwestern struck first in the second inning. Sam Stanford (So., Los Angeles, Calif./Pacifica Christian) began the inning getting hit by a pitch, and would later come around to score on a Doane error, giving Northwestern the 1-0 lead. That would be all that starter Brett Shelton (So., Clive, Iowa/Des Moines Christian) would need, proving to be the game-winning run.

The Raiders would pick up two more insurance runs in the fifth. Mason Porepp (So., Pleasant Hill, Iowa/Southeast Polk) led off the inning with a double and would later come into score on a passed ball, making it 2-0 NWC. The third run came when Kip Cullinan (Jr., Urbandale, Iowa/Urbandale) hit a sacrifice fly scoring Jaden Snyder (Jr., Larchwood, Iowa/West Lyon).

GAME 2: (RV) Doane 6, Northwestern 3
The two teams traded runs in the third inning, before Snyder gave the Raiders the big 2-out hit they were looking for in the fourth, driving in two runs to make it 3-1.

The two teams would be scoreless until the seventh and eighth inning, when the Tigers pushed across a single run in each of the innings to pull even at 3-3.

The game would remain scoreless for the next five innings. Doane would put three up on the board in the top half of the 14th inning to earn the 6-3 victory to split the doubleheader.

The Raiders will conclude their six-game homestand with a doubleheader against the Midland Warriors (18-7, 5-5 GPAC) with a doubleheader on Friday, April 8 with a 5:00 p.m. first pitch.
