Raiders, Defenders Complete Final Round Of GPAC Championship

Council Bluffs, Iowa — The Northwestern College women’s golf team closed its 2020-21 season with a seventh place finish and the Dordt Defender women’s golf team finished the 2020-21 season with a tenth place finish at the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Championship. The four-round, 72-hole event concluded Saturday at the Bent Tree Golf Club in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

In seventh place after Friday’s third round, Northwestern held its spot in the final team standings by shooting a 349 in today’s final round. Head Coach Courtney Den Herder’s squad shed four strokes off its third round total of 353 and carded its best round of the 72-hole championship.

Northwestern’s 72-hole score as 1,438, nine strokes in back of College of Saint Mary, and 20 shots ahead of eighth-place Mount Marty. Morningside ran away with the team title, shooting a four-round score of 1,247. Three Morningside golfers occupied the top three spots in the individual standings, led by Sam Knight, who shot a 305 to win the GPAC title by four strokes. Maria Zorrilla was second with a 309 and Laia Badosa third with a 311.

The Defenders finished the four round event with 409-378-381-370, recording their best round of the competition on the last day of play.

The Defenders were 35 strokes out of ninth place and five strokes in front of Hastings.

Northwestern’s Kate Wynja matched her season-best with an 81 in Saturday’s final round and placed just outside of the top 10, in 11th place, with a 72-hole score of 338. Hayley Carlson carded an 89 in today’s final round and tied for 16th overall (354), three strokes out of the top 15. Maddie Schrack shot a final round 92 and ended the championship in 26th place (364), followed by Morgan Roberts (382) in 32nd place with a final round 87. Taylor Van Ostrand was the fifth Raider golfer and shot a final round 95.

Dordt’s Rachel Bostwick shot an 86 for her best round in the competition while Bailey Weg and Gianna Van Klaveren both shot 94 and Tess Hemmila’s 96 completed Dordt’s scoring four.
