Raiders Season Ends With Loss To #16 Morningside

Sioux City, Iowa — The Northwestern College men’s soccer team had its 2020 season come to an end with a close 3-2 loss to #16 Morningside in the semifinals of the Great Plains Athletic Conference tournament played Tuesday in Sioux City, Iowa.

Head Coach Dan Swier’s squad ends the season with an 11-6-1 record.

Scoreless after the first 45 minutes in a first half dictated by defense, both teams found their groove on offense, scoring a combined five goals during the final 45 minutes.

Morningside was the first to find the back of the net less than five minutes into the second frame on an own goal. The Raiders came back to tie the match when Juan Mackrey broke free from the Mustangs defense and scored at the 69th minute. Less than a minute later, Morningside grabbed the lead back on another own goal.

Okan Golge, the GPAC’s leading scorer, gave the Mustangs a 3-1 lead with the all-important insurance goal off an assist from Robin Thomala during the 82nd minute. Mackrey scored the Raiders second goal four minutes later with an assist from Matt Roll.

Ezekiel Foltz stopped five Morningside shots; the Raiders totaled four shots on goal, two by Mackrey and one each for James Bolger and Philippe Patri.
