Red Raider Women Dismantle Mount Marty

Sammy Blum scored a game-high 22 points, 17 in the second half, in leading Northwestern to an 88-66 road win over Mount Marty Wednesday night in a conference match-up played in Yankton, S.D.

The win propels the Raiders to a game over .500 in the GPAC (6-5), 6-8 overall; Mount Marty slips to 1-10 in the conference, 3-11 overall.

Blum scored 12 points in a third quarter that Northwestern outscored the Lancers 26-10 and really put the game out of reach. Molly Schany missed just one shot from the field (8/9) in a 17-point, 5-rebound effort while Taylor VanderVelde scored in double figures for the second consecutive game, contributing 11 points and three rebounds.

Northwestern shot 56% for the game and held a commanding advantage on the boards, outrebounding the hosts 39-24, led by Hannah Nerem with seven.

The Raiders scored the final seven points of the first quarter for a 22-13 lead. A basket by Schany put her team in front by 10 with 6:35 left in the second quarter, a period that ended with the Raiders up 44-29.

An early 7-2 run, finished off with a Jada Cunningham three-pointer, gave Northwestern its first 20-point lead at the 8:24 mark of the third quarter. Head Coach Chris Yaw’s squad later went on a 15-0 surge, beginning with five points by Blum and ending with a jumper from Maddie Jones, for a 66-35 lead.

Mount Marty shot 41% for the game, 28% (7/25) from the three-point line. Karlee McKinney was the lone Lancers player in double figures with 20.

Both teams committed 16 turnovers and made nine free throws.
