Fremont, Nebraska — The Northwestern College women’s basketball team looks to extend its win streak to eight games when they travel to Midland for a conference match-up on Saturday, Jan. 30.
Tip-off in Fremont, Neb. is set for 2pm. Northwestern has won seven straight games to move into third place in the GPAC with a 12-5 record, 12-8 overall; Midland brings a 10-8 league record, 13-8 overall into Saturday’s game.
Last Time vs Midland, Northwestern dropped an 80-74 decision to the Warriors in a conference match-up played at the Bultman Center on Nov. 25.
Northwestern College was outscored by 13 in the final quarter; the Raiders were led by Molly Schany, who scored 14 points and grabbed eight rebounds, while Jazy Prins scored a career-best 11 points. The Raiders shot 42% for the game, 44% (10/23) from the three-point line, and held a slight edge on the glass (41-39), led by Taylor VanderVelde with a career-best 11.
Midland was led in scoring by the duo of Makenna Sullivan and Lexis Haase with 25 and 22 points, respectively. Sullivan converted 14-of-18 free throw attempts. The Warriors shot 43% for the game, 35% from the arc. They had a significant advantage at the free throw line, going 22-for-28; Northwestern was 4-of-7 from the charity stripe.
The Warriors their 2020-21 season off hot, winning eight of their first 10 games, including a 4-0 start to the season and a 91-79 road win over defending GPAC Champion Concordia on Nov. 10. Since then, the Warriors have lost eight games in GPAC play, bringing their conference record to 10-8; 13-8 overall.
Gilbert is in his eighth season as the Warriors head coach, taking over the Midland program in 2013-14. Prior to Midland, Gilbert served as the recruiting coordinator at the University of Nebraska, a role he held for four seasons. Last year, Midland tied Briar Cliff for eighth place in the GPAC with an 8-14 record, 12-19 overall. They return three starters and 10 players from last year’s team; they were picked to finish ninth in the GPAC preseason poll.
The Raiders have won seven straight, bringing their GPAC record to 12-5; 12-8 overall; Their most recent wins over Dordt, Hastings, and Briar Cliff put them in third place in the GPAC after a 0-5 start. Northwestern is now receiving votes in the latest NAIA Women’s Basketball Coaches’ Poll.
