Sergeant Bluff, Iowa — The Sergeant Bluff-Luton Warriors swept Western Christian Monday night in Sergeant Bluff. Both games went down to the wire with the Lady Warriors taking the girls game 51-47, and the Warriors taking the boys game 47-43.
In the girls game, Western would jump out to a quick lead behind 5 3-pointers, giving the Wolfpack a 21-15 lead after one. Western pulled out to a 30-15 lead midway through the second quarter, but the Warriors would claw back to within 7 at half 32-25, in favor of Western. Western’s lead started to dwindle in the third, only up four points at 38-34 heading into the final quarter. Sergeant Bluff-Luton was able to convert six of seven free throws and hit some key baskets to take the 51-47 win.
SBL got a game high 21 points from Emma Sulker, and Payten Hardy added 16. Western’s leading scorer was Lydia Van Kley with 14.
With the win, Sergeant Bluff-Luton improves to 4-1 on the season. Western falls to 2-6 on the season.
Cold shooting doomed the Wolfpack boys. Sergeant Bluff-Luton had the lead after one quarter of play 14-8. Western got to within one just before halftime, but a late bucket by Jack Layman gave SBL and 3 point advantage, 23-20 at the half. Western was able to get some momentum in the third quarter and tie the game up at 34-34, but the Warriors remained in front after three 36-37. Western took their first lead of the game with five minutes remaining at 39-37, but Sergeant-Bluff Luton tie the game back up at 43-43 with 1:37 left on the clock. Key free throws by the Warriors sealed the deal to give Sergeant Bluff-Luton their second win of the year, 47-43.
Sergeant-Bluff Luton got a game high 15 points from Jack Layman, who went 6/6 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter. Western had two players in double figures. Eli Van Essen had a game high 13 points, and Tye Van Essen put in 12.
With the win, SBL improves to 2-4 on the season, and Western falls to 5-2.
