Joseph Schoonhoven, a senior at Unity Christian High School, has announced his intention to attend Dordt and join the Defender cross country and track programs.
Schoonhoven has personal bests of 10:12 in the 3200 meters; 4:41 in the 1600 meters and 16:52 on a 5000 meter cross country course. Schoonhoven has been a part of two state runner-up team finishes in cross country and finished 13th in the Class 2A field in 2017 with a time of 16:54. He’s been an all-conference performer three times in track and field, four times in cross country and once in baseball.
“I am excited to have Joey join the Defender Cross Country and Track & Field programs. Joey has had good success as an individual and as a member of the Unity Christian program under Coach Kaemingk. He is an all-around athlete, having played both basketball and baseball in addition to running in high school. That athleticism will be a benefit as he transitions to college running. I look forward to seeing him have a solid group of men to work with daily during the year. I believe his strongest days of running are ahead of him, and I look forward to working with him over the next four years,” said Dordt cross country coach Nate Wolf.
Joseph is the son of Marlin and Leah Schoonhoven of Ireton, Iowa. He plans to study Exercise Science or pre-Physical Therapy.
