Schouten To Play Football, Baseball at Northwestern

Tanner Schouten has signed a letter of intent to continue his football and baseball careers at Northwestern College next fall.

Schouten is a 6’3″, 175-pound wide receiver / defensive back who played three years for Unity Christian. Schouten led the Knights with 33 catches for 571 yards, 12th most in class 2A, and eight touchdowns. He added three rushing touchdowns and scored on a pair of kick returns, averaging an impressive 32.4 yards per return.
Defensively, Schouten totaled six interceptions, tied for the second most in class 2A, and returned one for a score. He accounted for 15.5 tackles, including 12 solo and 1.5 for a loss. Schouten is an all-district and all-Northwest Iowa Review selection.

“Tanner is a tremendously gifted athlete,” said Northwestern Head Football Coach Matt McCarty. “He can impact a game in so many ways and is capable of scoring from anywhere on the field. We are thrilled to have Tanner commit to our program and are excited to watch him over the next four years.”

A four-year starter for the Knights baseball team heading into his final season next summer, Schouten hit .348 with 15 runs scored and nine RBI in leading his team to the sub-state final as a junior. He compiled 11 stolen bases and went 1-2 with a 1.43 ERA in 28.2 innings on the mound. Schouten has earned all-conference all-district honors multiple years. He plans to study elementary education at Northwestern and is son of Jeff and Liza.

“Tanner has been a target for us for a long time,” said Northwestern Head Baseball Coach Brian Wede. Playing for Unity Christian, he is someone that we are quite familiar with and feel has a high ceiling. Tanner comes from a baseball family and is extremely competitive, two things that will help him reach his potential. We look forward to watching him develop in all areas of his life; in his faith, his academics and in athletics.”
