Sheldon Iowa — Central Lyon and Sheldon split a conference basketball doubleheader at the Orena on Friday night. Central Lyon took the girls game 57-41 with the boys game going to the Orabs 57-53.
In the girls game Central Lyon took a 16-10 first quarter lead only to see Sheldon pull in front at halftime 29-28. Central Lyon got the offense going in the third quarter and a 6 point lead became a 9 point lead when Sutton Schlumbohm hit a three as the buzzer sounded to give the Lions a 46-37 lead going into the fourth quarter. Central Lyon maintained the momentum as they went on to a 57-41 win.
Central Lyon put four starters in double figures getting a game high 15 from Schlumbohm. Hayden Heimensen added 12, Kiley Metzger hit for 11 with Farah Lewis ending the night with 10 points. Sheldon was led by Brooklyn Grady with 13 points. She was joined in double figures by Makenna Kleinhesselink who had a 10 point night.
With the loss Sheldon falls to 2-6 on the year and 2-5 in the conference. Central Lyon is off to a 6-1 start both on the year and in the conference.
In the boys game both teams looked to spread the floor and run from beginning to end with the 3-point bucket one of the main story lines of the game. Sheldon hit 12 of them on the night and Central Lyon dropped in 10 as the teams combined for 22 3-point buckets in the ballgame.
Sheldon led at all the breaks. They were up 19-6 at the end of the first quarter and pulled into halftime up by ten, 34-24. Central Lyon started the third quarter on a 10-3 run and the two teams played even most of the way to the end of the game. At the end of the third quarter the Orab lead was 48-42 as they went on to win it 57-53. In the final second Tye Sudbeck hit a pair of free throws to first make it a 3-point game and the second that made it a 2 possession game.
On the night Sudbeck dropped a trio of threes as part of an 18 point night to lead all scorers. Mitchal Wolf hit five 3-pointers on the way to a 17 point night. Central Lyon was led by Zach Lutmer who hit a trio of threes as part of a 16 point night. 12 of Cole Hoogendorn’s 14 points came from behind the stripe.
With the win Sheldon is 2-5 on the year and 2-4 in the conference headed into the break. Central Lyon is 2-4 both on the year and in the conference.
Next action for Sheldon comes on Friday January 3rd at West Lyon. The Lions will be home to Okoboji on Friday the 3rd.
