Spirit Lake, Iowa — The Sheldon Orabs are State Tournament bound after defeating the Alta/Aurelia Warriors 62-42 Monday night in the Class 2A Substate 2 matchup in Spirit Lake.

Both teams battled in the opening quarter going point for point, but Sheldon led after one 12-10 via a Tyler Merley jumper as time expired. Alex Snyder scored all ten of the Warriors points. Sheldon created some separation in the second quater by going on a 12-0 run late in the half. That run was the turning point of the game.
That’s Orab Head Coach Eric Maassen. At intermission, Sheldon led 27-14. After three, the Orabs led 45-27 and Sheldon went on to the 62-42 win.
Sheldon had two players in double figures. Kyle Boerhave and Jaden Kleinhesselink each had fifteen points. Alta/Aurelia got a game high twenty-one points from Alex Snyder.
In other post game comments Maassen felt the Substate appearance and win were the culmination of a seasons worth of work.
There is a lot to like about this years team and we asked the coach what stands out to him.
Head Coach Maassen was an assistant on the Orabs State Tournament Team in 2013. He’s excited to get back and gives full credit to his players.
Sheldon improves to 21-3 on the year. Alta/Aurelia ends their season at 18-5. Sheldon opens tuorrnament play on Monday March 5th as the 2 seed. It will be an 8:15 tip off against Kuemper Catholic the 7 seed.

The Orab Boys’ Basketball Team is scheduled to play Kuemper Catholic in the Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines at 8:15 p.m. on Monday, March 5.
Monday, March 5th – 1 HOUR EARLY OUT
Tuesday, March 6th – 2 HOUR LATE START
If the Orab Boys’ Basketball Team WINS in the FIRST ROUND of tournament play, the next scheduled game would be at 8:15 p.m. on Wednesday, March 7.
Wednesday, March 7th – 1 HOUR EARLY DISMISSAL (NO PD for staff)
Thursday, March 8 – 2 HOUR LATE START
If the Orab Boys’ Basketball Team LOSES in the SECOND ROUND of tournament play, the next scheduled game would be at 12:15 p.m. on Thursday, March 8.
