George, Iowa — The Sheldon Orabs and George-Little Rock Mustangs split a Siouxland Conference doubleheader Friday night in George. The girls game went to Sheldon 62-50, while the boys game went to GLR 59-56 in an overtime thriller.
The girls contest started with each team trading baskets. After one, Sheldon had a slim 15-14 lead. McKenzie Wagner had nine first quarter points for the Orabs. The Mustangs then pulled away in the second quarter as G-LR went on a 12-0 run to lead by as much as eleven. Sheldon then closed the gap with a 6-0 run, and at half the score was 28-23 Mustangs. Mackensie Post of G-LR had eleven first half points. Both teams continued to battle back and forth and Sheldon was able to regain the lead late in the third. Heading into the final eight minutes, Sheldon led 44-41. The Orabs started the fourth quarter on a 7-0 run and went on to win 62-50.
Sheldon got a game high sixteen points from Brooklyn Grady, and Hannah Van Meeteren added ten points. G-LR had two players in double figures. Post had a team high thirteen points, and Kayla Gerken put in ten points.
Sheldon improves to 5-15 on the year, and 4-13 in the Siouxland. G-LR falls to 4-16 on the season, and 2-15 in the conference.
The Sheldon boys led by as much as seven in the opening quarter, and after one led 16-12. The Mustangs then took the lead midway through the second quarter with the help of a 7-0 run, and at the break led 33-30. Both teams battled down low in the third, and heading into the final quarter, G-LR led 42-40. Both teams would remain deadlocked in the fourth, and the game would head to overtime tied 48-48. Much of overtime was spent at the charity stripe for both teams. The Mustangs went 11 of 14 from the line, while Sheldon went 1 of 5. The Mustangs came away with the 59-56 win.
G-LR had three players in double figures. Caleb Ter Hark had a team high fifteen, Lucas Nagel added fourteen, and Josh Haken put in eleven. Sheldon got a game high twenty-one from Kyle Boerhave, and Ryan Van Marel put in seventeen points.
The Mustangs improve to 13-6 on the year, and 10-6 in the Siouxland. Sheldon falls to 16-3 on the year, and 13-3 in the Conference.
Next up for the Orabs is a road contest against Central Lyon at Rock Rapids Tuesday night. George-Little Rock will host Okoboji on Tuesday night.
