Sheldon Iowa — The Sheldon Orab basketball teams celebrated senior night with a doubleheader sweep of Central Lyon Tuesday night. The girls game went to Sheldon 48-45 with the boys winning 72-45.
Sheldon led at all the breaks in the girls game. They were up 14-9 at the end of the first quarter and up 27-23 at the half. At the end of the third quarter they had pushed the lead to 40-30 and despite a strong come back effort by the Lions the Orabs held on to win 48-45. Cassidy Bart led the Orabs with 12 points followed by senior Bryn Groff with 10. Central Lyon got a game high 16 from Sutton Schlumbohm and 10 from Becca Roskam.
As a team Sheldon hit five three point buckets in the contest. Central Lyon countered with a perfect 24-of-24 performance at the free throw line. With the win Sheldon finishes the regular season at 5-16 on the year and 4-14 in the conference. Central Lyon wraps up the regular season at 8-13 going 7-11 in the Siouxland Conference. Sheldon opens the 3A Regional quarterfinals at Sioux Center Saturday night. Central Lyon will open 2A Regional play at home Saturday with a play in game against Boyden Hull to set the quarterfinals.
In the boys game Sheldon led at all the breaks on route to a 72-45 win. At the end of the first quarter it was 24-14 and at halftime a corner three at the buzzer by Tyler Merley put the Orabs up 37-27. At the end of three quarter the lead was 58-38 with Sheldon going on to win 72-45.
Sheldon put three players in double figures getting 15 apeace from both Merley and Kyle Boerhave. All 15 of Merley’s points came from beyond the arc. Senior Sam Wagner pumped in 11. Central Lyon was led by Riley Van Wyhe with a 19 point night.
With the win Sheldon is 16-4 on the year and 14-3 in the conference. Central Lyon stands at 7-13 for the year and 4-13 in the Siouxland. Sheldon wraps up the regular season Friday night with a trip to West Lyon. The Lions close the regular season with a stop at Okoboji.
