Sheldon Iowa — It took overtime but Sioux Center left Sheldon with a 22-21 district football win over the Orabs.
Sioux Center won the toss in overtime and gave the ball to Sheldon. Alex Zolle went in from 10 yards out and with Parker Nissen adding the extra point Sheldon led 21-14.
The Warriors countered with a 5 yard Payton Boone run off the jet sweep and then went for the win. Tyus Arends burrowed across for the 2-point conversion and Sioux Center left Sheldon with a 22-21 overtime win.
Sheldon had scored first in the second quarter as they went 79 yards for the score. Jaden Kleinhesselink found Mitchal Van Gorp on a 4th and 20 for what turned out to be a 36 yard score. The extra point was blocked and 6-0 would be the half time score.
Sioux Center opened the second half with a 67 yard drive capped by a 3 yard Dalton Schreiner touchdown run. Schreiner added the extra point as the Warriors took a 7-6 lead with 8:33 left in the third quarter.
Sheldon would take the lead with an 82 yard drive. Alex Zolle scored on a 1 yard run. Zolle carried again for the two point conversion and the Orabs were up 14-7 with 9:28 left in the game.
Sioux Center answered with a 64 yard drive to tie the score. Schreiner scored on a 2 yard run. Schreiner’s kick was blocked but went straight up in the air and had just enough distance to clear the cross bar. That made the score 14-14 with 6:19 to play and that would be the score at the end of regulation setting up the overtime.
With the win Sioux Center improves to 4-3 on the year and 3-2 in the district. Sheldon stands at 3-4 on the year and 1-4 in the district.
The Orabs will host Pocahontas Area next Friday while the Warriors travel to Boyden Hull Rock Valley.
