(KIWA Staff Photo)Sheldon, Iowa — Northwest Iowa Community College student-athletes continued their fall seasons with competition in soccer, volleyball and men’s golf.
Men’s Soccer
The Thunder men’s soccer team saw its winning streak come to an end with a 6–2 loss to Dakota County Technical College (DCTC) on September 9.
NCC took an early 2–0 lead. Vinnie Loosemore scored with an assist from Silas Stotz, and Leslie Musaka added the second goal with an assist from Jair Martinez. DCTC responded with six goals in the second half as the Thunder were unable to hold the lead.
The Thunder will look to bounce back when they open conference play against Hawkeye Community College on September 19.
Women’s Soccer
The Thunder women’s soccer team fell 1–0 to Dakota County Technical College in a hard-fought match on September 9.
After a scoreless first half, NCC created several scoring opportunities in the second half but was unable to find the back of the net. DCTC scored the game’s lone goal following a corner kick that the Thunder were unable to clear.
The Thunder women will also open conference play against Hawkeye Community College on September 19.
Volleyball
The Thunder volleyball team fell 3–0 to Western Iowa Tech Community College on September 9 and 3–0 to Marshalltown Community College on September 10.
Despite the losses, NCC continued to show improvement and demonstrated greater balance both offensively and defensively. While four players generated much of the Thunder’s offense, Maddie Huisman did a strong job distributing the ball to NCC’s hitters. The team also showed increased consistency in its defense and serve receive.
Men’s Golf
The Thunder men’s golf team took another positive step forward at the North Iowa Area Community College Fall Invitational on September 10. NCC finished 13th among 19 teams—just one stroke behind 10th place.
Wyatt Wittrock led the Thunder varsity by shooting a school-record 3-over-par 74 and finishing tied for 20th individually. The performance came in his first time playing the course.
Karson Hoogendoorn followed with a 76 to finish tied for 27th, while Carson Arens shot a 77 and finished tied for 38th. Cody Snyders rounded out the varsity scoring with an 81.
Eli Segar led the Thunder junior varsity with an 86.
Overall, the Thunder demonstrated improved consistency throughout the 18-hole competition.
Sports Shooting
The Thunder Sports Shooting team competed against Iowa Central Community College in Rock Valley on September 9, falling 482–394.
Madelyn Kelley finished third in the Women’s Singles Trap Division with a score of 57. Braden Whiteley led the Thunder with a score of 93, followed closely by Kollyn Wiemers with a 92.
The Thunder will return to action against Iowa Lakes Community College on September 26.
