Unity Moves on to Monday Regional Final

Orange City Iowa — #15 Unity Christian earned a spot in the 2A Region 1 girls final with a 54-51 win over Central Lyon Friday night at the Unity Gym. Unity will meet #4 Cherokee for a trip to the State Tournament when they get together Monday night at the Western Christian Gym. Cherokee earned their spot with a 77-50 home win over Boyden Hull.

A Janie Schoonhoven bucket as time expired put the Knights up 18-13 at the end of the first quarter. By halftime the lead was up to 34-25. Central Lyon got right back in it with a 10-0 run to start the second half and the two teams traded buckets the rest of the way. Unity was able to weather the storm and at the end of the third quarter Unity held a 44-40 lead. With time winding down Schoonhoven went 1-of-2 at the free throw line to put the Knights up by three and that’s the way the game ended with Unity winning 54-51.

Central Lyon got a game high 22 points from Hayden Heimensen and 15 from Sutton Schlumbohm. Unity had three players in double figures led by Jori Bronner with 18. Schoonhoven finished with 15 while Corrina Timmermans added 13 points.

With the win Unity improves to 18-5 on the year while Central Lyon ends the season at 13-11. Up next for the Knights will be the Region final Monday night against Cherokee.
