Larchwood Iowa — The Sheldon Girls Basketball Team opened the season on the road at West Lyon Tuesday night falling to the host team Wildcats 56-30. West Lyon led at all the breaks up 11-7 at the end of the first quarter and 20-15 at the half. The Wildcats took control of the game in the third quarter led by a 10 point effort from Kate Groeneweg to move in front 43-26 at the end of the third quarter. Groeneweg hit a three at the buzzer as an exclamation point just as she had at the end of the first half. She finished with 15 points. West Lyon would go on to win 56-30.
Also in double figures for West Lyon was Chaydon Metzger who hit for 15 points on the night as well. Sheldon was led by Taylor Weber with 9 points.
With the loss Sheldon opens 0-1 in the conference and for the season. West Lyon opens at 1-0. Both teams are off until Tuesday November 29th. Sheldon will be at Boyden Hull for another girls only match up. West Lyon will host Okoboji in a girls, boys doubleheader. The Sheldon boys will open the season on Friday December 2nd when the Orab girls and boys meet Sioux Center in the home opener.
