West Lyon to Play for 1A Football Title Friday

Northwest Iowa — #5 seed West Lyon will square off against #1 seed Van Meter at 10:00 am Friday morning at the Uni Dome.  Van Meter earned a spot with a 49-17 semifinal win over Iowa City Regina. Quarterback Anthony Potthoff had 3 rushing touchdowns in the game while running for 138 yards on 9 carries. The Wildcats earned their spot with a 26-21 win over West Sioux in the other semifinal. Quarterback Jalyn Gramstad led the way with 216 yards of total offense. Fullback Logan Meyer scored on a pair of touchdown runs including the game winner late in the forth quarter.

Van Meter comes in at 12-0 on the season while West Lyon is 11-1 with their only loss to West Sioux in the regular season’s week 7.

The Wildcats feature a balanced offense. Senior Logan Meyer has rushed for 1,225 yards and 23 touchdowns on the year averaging 7.5 yards per carry. Senior quarterback Jalyn Gramstad has rushed for 803 yards and 11 touchdowns while passing for  1,444 with 16 touchdowns to go against just 5 interceptions.

The defense has picked off 17 passes led by Gramstad with 5. Senior Davian Sterner has 4 sacks on the season.

Senior Anthony Potthoff leads the Van Meter offense with 2,444 yards of total offense. He’s passed for 1,553 yards and 16 touchdowns against just 1 interception on the year. He’s also rushed for 891 yards and another 15 touchdowns.  The Van Meter defense has picked off 12 passes and recovered 8 fumbles. Senior Cole Bryce has 12 solo tackles for a loss while senior Parker Fryer leads the team in tackles with 75.5.

The West Lyon and Van Meter game will be the first of the day on Friday with Kick off set for 10:00 am. There will be a Welcome Back celebration for the football team on Friday evening at 6:30 in the high school gym.  The public is invited to celebrate an outstanding season with the Wildcats.
