Western Christian Sweeps Storm Lake

Hull, Iowa — The Western Christian Wolfpack swept a Lakes Conference battle with Storm Lake Friday night in Hull. The Western girls held on for a 45-44 win, and the Wolfpack boys cruised to a 76-37 win.

The Western girls jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead, then Storm Lake returned fire with a 7-0 run of their own. Western retook the lead at the end of 1, 11-10. Western took a 22-16 lead into the half, and a 39-33 lead into the fourth quarter. Storm Lake would battle back in the final 8 minutes and down 2 late, Storm Lake’s Lillian Dahlhauser would head to the line to shoot two for a chance to tie with .5 seconds left. Dahlhauser would miss the first and make the second, and Western would escape with the 45-44 win.

Western got a team high 14 from Stella Winterfeld. Storm Lake had two players in double figures. Maddy Raveling put in a game high 21 points and Adeeya Yanga added 13.

With the win, Western improves to 4-6 on the year, and 1-3 in the Lakes. Storm Lake falls to 3-9 on the season and 0-5 in the conference.

The Western boys were down early 3-2, then went on a 13-0 run in the first quarter and cruised the rest of the way. Western’s lead was 21-5 after the first quarter, 40-15 at the half, 66-25 at the end of three and they went on to win 76-37.

Western had four players in double figures. Wyatt Gulker had a game high 18, Eli Van Essen put in 16, Caleb Douma added 16, and Ty Van Essen had 11 points on the night. Storm Lake got a team high 14 from Sam Slight.

With the win Western improves to 8-1 on the year and 2-1 in the Lakes. Storm Lake falls to 6-4 on the season and 2-3 in the conference.

Up next for Western is a road trip to Sioux Center on Tuesday, January 11th.
