Western Christian’s season came to a close in the State Quarterfinals of Class 2A Tuesday afternoon. The number 2 seed and defending State Champs were upset by 6 seed Pella Christian 70-69.
Pella Christian opened the game with a barrage of 3-point buckets hitting seven in the first quarter and ten for the game. At the end of the first quarter the Eagles were up 23-9. At the half Western had trimmed the lead to 39-32 and by the end of the third quarter the Pella Christian lead was down to 53-46. A final push got the Wolfpack within two points at 67-65 with :17 seconds left to play. Josh VanLingen went off glass for a layup but that’s as close as they would get as the Eagles held off the Wolfpack for the 70-69 upset win.
Western got a huge game from VanLingen as he hit for 32 points and pulled down 17 rebounds. Also in double figures were Ben Gesink with 16 points and Taylor Miedema with 11 points.
Pella Christian had four players in double figures. David Kacmarynski led the way with 15 points. Josh Posthuma hit for 14. Jevi Jungling and Jason Holwarda netted 12 points each.
With the loss Western Christian finishes the year at 22-3. Pella Christian advances to the semis with a record of 17-6.
