Hull, Iowa — Western Christian was able to take two from Spirit Lake Tuesday night in Hull. The Western girls prevailed 39-33, and the boys won 63-42.
The girls game was close throughout. After one, Western was up 11-8, then at intermission pulled ahead 18-10. After three, Western’s lead was trimmed to 23-20. Western was able to hit 10 of twelve from the free throw line to keep Spirit Lake at bay and went on to win 39-33.
Western Christian got a game high 12 from Abby Postma and eleven points from Macay Van’t Hul. Spirit Lake got a team high eleven from Brooke Smith and Jordyn Hamm added 10.
With the win Western improves to 14-7 on the year and 8-2 in the Lakes. Spirit Lake falls to 11-9 on the season and 5-5 in the conference.
A big third quarter propelled the Western boys to victory. Western started the game up 7-0, but Spirit Lake battled back and it was 13-12 after one. Western again went on a 7-0 run to start the second quarter and had a 29-22 lead at half, thanks in part to Ty Van Essen hitting a buzzer beater at the break. Western pulled away in the third 50-34 and went on to win 63-42.
Western got a game high 19 from Ty Van Essen and Wyatt Gulker added 11. Spirit Lake got a team high 18 from Creighton Maricsh.
With the win Western improves to 16-4 and remained perfect in the Lakes. Spirit Lake fell to 11-9 on the season and 5-5 in the conference.
Up next for the Western boys is a road contest to Sioux Falls Christian Thursday night.
