Sheldon Splits With Boyden Hull Tuesday

Sheldon Iowa — The Sheldon Orabs split a Siouxland Conference basketball doubleheader with Boyden Hull Tuesday night at the Orina. The girls game went to the Comets 51-31. In the boys game a 3-point shot by Mitchel Wolf with :03 seconds left lifted Sheldon to a 60-57 win.

In the girls game Boyden Hull led at all the breaks taking a 15-12 first quarter lead and streched that to 10 at the half, 23-13. At the end of the third quarter the Cometsw were up 39-19 as they went on to the win.

Sheldon got a game high 12 points from Brooklyn Grady. Brooke Zylstra joined her in double figures with a team high 10 points.

With the win the Comets are 14-7 on the year and finish 12-6 in the conference. Sheldon ends the regular season at 5-16 with a 4-14 Siouxland mark. Now it’s on to the tournaments for both teams. Sheldon opens the quarterfinals of 3A Region 1 at Heelan on Saturday with a 5pm opening tip. The Comets await the quarterfinals of 2A Region 1 on Tuesday. They will be at West Sioux for a 7pm opening tip.

The boys game had high drama at the close. Sheldon took their only lead of the game late in the fourth quarter then had to get a pair of defensive stops to hold on for the win. Boyden Hull led 19-14 at the end of the first quarter and were up 35-28 at halftime. The lead was up to 43-37 at the end of the third quarter. In the fourth the Orabs took the lead only to see the game tied at 57-57 with :10 seconds left.

Sheldon called time out with :06 seconds left as they crossed mid court to set up the in bounds play. The Orabs got the ball to Wolf who worked free and drained the game winner from just off the top of the arc left side with :03 seconds left. Sheldon had to get a pair of defensive stop in the final seconds and did to earn the win.

Sheldon is now 6-14 on the season and 5-12 heading into the regular season finale. The Comets are 17-3 on the year and 15-2 in the conference. Boyden Hull had dropped the season opener to MOC Floyd Valley and not lost a conference game since then.

Sheldon ends the regular season at Sioux Center Friday night while the Comets will host Okoboji prior to the tournament. Both teams have been assigned to District 3 in Class 2A. Sheldon will open on Monday February 17th at Sioux Central against Pocahontas Area. Boyden Hull got a bye into semi finals and will host the winner of that game on Thursday the 20th in an 8pm contest.
