Western Christian got a split on the road at Cherokee Friday night. The girls game was in doubt until the final seconds with the Braves defending the home floor 57-54. In the boys game the Wolfpack took control early and never looked back in a 92-38 win.
In the girls game Western took a 14-9 first quarter lead and were up 27-26 at the half. Cherokee moved in front 38-36 after the third quarter and the lead went back and forth throughout the final 8 minutes with the Braves getting the win 57-54.
Cherokee got a game high 18 points from Kenna Mongan. Alexis Pingel and Addy Pigott were just out of double figures with 9 points each. Western was led by Lydia Van Kley with 16 followed by Shayla Van Beek with 9 points.
With the win Cherokee is 12-6 on the year and 5-3 in the conference. Western is 6-11 for the season and 2-6 in the Lakes.
In the boys game Western had the fast break going early as they led 22-10 after the first quarter. That became a 61-20 half time lead. With a running clock in the second half the Wolfpack were up 72-36 at the end of three and rolled to a 92-38 win.
The Wolfpack put 13 players in the scorebook and got double figure scoring from Tate Van Regenmorter with a game high 16. Ty Van Essen was next with 14 and Wyatt Gaulker added 13. Cherokee was led by Will Lugar who had a 13 point night.
Western improves to 14-1 on the year and 5-1 in the conference. The Braves are 8-8 on the season and 3-4 in the Lakes. Next up for Western is a Saturday doubleheader with Bishop Heelan. Cherokee is back in action with a road doubleheader at Spirit Lake.
