Western Meets Iowa City Regina for 1A Football Title Friday

Western Christian 2Cedar Falls Iowa — Western Christian takes a 10 game winning streak into the 1A championship Friday morning at the UNI Dome. The Wolfpack will square off against the six time defending Champion Regals of Iowa City Regina. Kick off is set for 11:06. The only loss for either team came on opening night. Both enter the title game at 11-1. It will be a rematch of last years Championship game.

3rd ranked Western Christian earned a spot in the 1A football title game for the second consecutive year with a 35-14 win over 4th ranked Van Meter in the State semi finals.

The game was tied at 7-7 when quarterback Tyson Kooima found Jesse Jansma in the end zone to put the Wolfpack up 14-7. The Bulldogs would answer with a scoring drive of their own to tie the game at 14-14 and that would be the half time score.

The Wolfpack broke open a close game with a trio of second half touchdowns to seal the win. Kooima connected with Ben Gesink for a pair of touchdowns and a 28-14 lead. A final Wolfpack touchdown pass from Kooima to Daniel Donovan made the final 35-14.

The Regals rolled to a 42-6 win over Denver in the other semifinal. Regals quarterback Micheal Conlon was 15-of-23 for 277 yards and 3 touchdowns on completions of 72, 49 and 21 yards. Iowa City Regina added a trio of rushing touchdowns from three different running backs. Issac Vollstedt totaled 109 yards on 11 carries to lead the ground game.
