Hull, Iowa — The Western Christian Wolfpack split a Lakes Conference double header with Cherokee Friday night in Hull. Cherokee took the girls game 62-47, and Western took the boys game 70-39.
In the girls game, Western was able to keep pace with Cherokee in the first half. Western trailed at the end of one 16-11, and in the second quarter Western was able to close the gap to two points before Cherokee created some separation at the end of the second quarter for the 32-25 lead. Cherokee’s lead grew to 47-35 after three and went on to win 62-47.
Cherokee had three players in double figures. They had a team high 15 from Molly Pitts and Alexis Pingle and 11 from Kenna Mongan. Western got a game high 17 from Stella Winterfeld and ten from Lydia Van Kley.
With the win Cherokee improves to 6-2 on the year and 2-1 in the Lakes. Western falls to 2-5 on the season and 0-3 in the conference.
The Western boys cruised to a 70-39 victory and held Cherokee’s Wil Lugar, who was averaging 25 points a game, to just 2 points on the night.
Western jumped in front 18-10 after the first quarter with 10 points coming from Wyatt Gulker. Western pulled away in the second with a 35-19 lead heading into halftime. After three it was 49-30, and in the fourth with 6 minutes to go in the game the reserves were in for both teams. Western came away with the 70-39 win.
Western got a game high 15 from Gulker, and fourteen points from Ty Van Essen.
With the win Western improves to 5-1 on the year and 3-1 in the Lakes. Cherokee falls to 3-3 on the season and falls to 1-2 in the conference.
Up next, the Western boys take on Omaha Westside at the Tyson Events Center on Saturday. Their next double header is Tuesday at home against Sergeant Bluff-Luton
