Newell, Iowa — The Western Christian Wolfpack split with Newell-Fonda Tuesday night in Newell. The girls game went to the Mustangs 86-34, and the Wolfpack boys came away with the 96-68 win.
In the girls game, Newell-Fonda continued where they left off last season and started the game off with a 15-0 run. After the first quarter of play, the Mustangs were in front 27-8. Newell-Fonda extended their lead to 53-10 at half, and cruised in the second half to a 86-34 win.
Newell-Fonda had three players in double figures. Bailey Sievers had a game high 17 points, Maggie Walker added 14, and Macy Sievers put in 13 points. Western’s leading scorer was Madison Vis with 13 points.
With the win, Newell-Fonda improves to 2-0 on the year. Western falls to 1-1 on the young season.
The Western boys had to overcome a slow start to their game. Newell-Fonda jumped out in front and had a 10 point lead after the first eight minutes, 26-16. Western was able to cut the deficit and trailed at half 44-41. Western took control in the second half, holding the Mustangs to 12 3rd quarter points, and jumped in front 65-56 after three. Western put it away in the final 8 minutes and came away with the 96-68 win.
Western had 3 players in double figures. Ty Van Essen had a game high 24 points, Tyson Boer put in 19, and Wyatt Gulker added 16. Newell-Fonda’s leading scorer was Ryan Greenfield with 14.
With the win, the Wolfpack improve to 1-0 on the year, and Newell-Fonda falls to 0-1.
