Six Fire Departments Called To Grass Fire

Le Mars, Iowa — Three Sioux County fire departments were among six departments that fought a grass fire north of Le Mars on Sunday, April 29th, 2018.

Le Mars Fire Chief David Schipper tells us what happened.

Schipper says the Merrill Fire Department was also asked to help. He says they really appreciated the help from the local farmers. He says without their help there probably would have been another five or six fire departments on the scene.

He tells us what he thinks caused the fire.

He says they probably used between four thousand and five thousand gallons of water to fight the fire. He says they had four grass rigs that are able to pump water and roll at the same time, plus Orange City has a smaller tanker that can get to the action. He says they used the bigger trucks to refill the grass rigs.

He says the roughly forty firefighters were on-scene for about an hour and a half.
