Backers “Thrilled” About HMS Bond Issue Passage

Hartley, Melvin, & Sanborn, Iowa — An $18.9 million bond issue has apparently passed for the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn Community School District. Similar bond issues were defeated on three previous occasions.

The bond issue for building construction and renovations passed by 65.55%. A 60% supermajority was needed for the issue to pass.

Jill Kunzman was the bond chairperson. She says the reaction to the news was strong.

She says they are glad that despite the weather, the measure got over 5 percent more than it needed.

Kunzman says the committee worked hard to make sure people knew the issues before voting.

She tells us what’s next for HMS.

The raw vote totals were 1199 yes votes, or 65.55% to 630 no votes, or 34.45%. The results become official after they are canvassed by the O’Brien County Board of Supervisors.
