City: Don’t Hook Your Sump Pump To The Sanitary Sewer

Sheldon, Iowa — With all the rain we’ve had the past few weeks, some sump pumps are working overtime. And all that extra water has to go somewhere. But one place that it SHOULDN’T go is into the sanitary sewer.

That’s from Sheldon Public Works Director Todd Uhl. He tells us why connecting sump pump output to the sanitary sewer is a no-no.

He tells us about those “concerns.”

He says sump pumps connected to the sanitary sewer could cause sewage in your basement or that of your neighbors, and cleanup often easily runs into the thousands of dollars. Plus, you could cause an environmental issue as well.

It’s possible that some people are not even aware that their sump pump output is connected to the sanitary sewer instead of being routed outside. It might not hurt to have it checked out to make sure you’re in compliance. If you need more information, you can call Uhl at the Sheldon City Office at 324-4651.
