UPDATE: Charges Filed In Connection With January Explosion & Fire

Sheldon, Iowa — Charges have been filed in connection with a January explosion and fire at a Sheldon residence.

On January 22nd, around 9:15 pm, the Sheldon Fire Company and Sheldon Police Department were dispatched to 1325 South 3rd Avenue in Sheldon for a house fire and a report of an explosion. The Sheldon Fire Company began to attack that fire while officers with the Sheldon Police Department, as well as a deputy from the O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office, began investigating the blaze.

According to Sheldon Police they began to receive new information in late February regarding a female juvenile who became a person of interest in the case. Police say the girl was brought to the police department by her mother for an interview with an officer from the Sheldon Police Department. During the course of the interview, police say a confession was obtained as well as a written statement from the juvenile.

Police say the case was then referred to the office of the O’Brien County Attorney. The 15-year old juvenile female,  has been charged with Arson in the 2nd Degree which is a class C felony, according to authorities. The case has been forwarded to the State of Iowa’s Juvenile Court Services Department and the O’Brien County Attorney’s Office for prosecution.

Assisting the Sheldon Police Department in the investigation was the Sheldon Fire Company, the O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office, and the Iowa Department of Public Safety’s State Fire Marshall’s Division.

Sheldon, Iowa — The Sheldon Fire Company was called to the report of a structure fire shortly after 9:00 Tuesday evening.

Sheldon Assistant Fire Chief Brad Hindt says when fire crews arrived at 1325 S. 3rd Avenue, they found a fire showing on the back side of the house. Hindt says the blaze was quickly extinguished.

No injuries were reported in the incident, and Hindt says the cause of the blaze is under investigation.

22 firefighters responded to the scene, and were on scene until approximately 11:00 pm.

Sheldon Fire was assisted on scene by Sheldon Police, O’Brien County Sheriff’s Department, SCAT, Sheldon EMA, O’Brien County EMA and City of Sheldon Water Department.
