Alton Woman Taken To Hospital After ATV Accident, Driver Charged

Alton, Iowa — An Alton woman was taken to the hospital after an ATV accident in Alton on Saturday, May 21, 2022.

The Orange City/Alton Police Department reports that at about 9:20 p.m., 31-year-old Travis Wiersma of Alton was driving a 2022 Polaris ATV eastbound on 10th Street in Alton.

The report says that Wiersma was driving his ATV east on 10th Street and attempted to turn south onto Second Avenue in Alton. The officer says Wiersma lost control of his ATV and rolled it onto its driver’s side. Wiersma and his passenger sustained minor injuries as a result of the crash. The passenger, identified as 40-year-old Billy Jo Tyler, was left with friends and was later transported to the Orange City Health system for treatment of her injuries. The report says Wiersma left the scene in his ATV and did not notify emergency services or make a 911 call. The report says the officer was notified by the emergency room doctor of the accident.

Wiersma’s Polaris ATV sustained $1000 in damages.

Wiersma was cited on charges of failing to maintain control and leaving the scene of an injury accident.
