Barn Destroyed In Fire Near Calumet

Calumet, Iowa — A old barn and hay inside were destroyed in a fire on Saturday, April 9, 2022, near Calumet.

According to Calumet Fire Chief Korey Dau, at about 3:20 p.m., the Calumet Fire Department was called to the report of an abandoned barn on fire at 6186 460th Street, three miles north and one and a half west of Calumet.

The chief says the fire department saw the barn fully engulfed as they approached the scene. He says the barn collapsed shortly after they arrived. Dau tells us there was old hay and straw in the barn and it went fast. According to Dau, some grass and trees were also on fire along with part of a cornfield.

Dau says no injuries were reported.

The fire department was assisted by the Paullina and Granville fire departments.

Chief Dau reports that while the barn was totaled, firefighters were able to save a nearby hog house.

He says the firefighters who responded were on the scene for about three hours.
