Fire Departments Extinguish Weekend Grass Fires

Northwest Iowa — A number of fires were extinguished over the weekend in northwest Iowa.

In our area, the first call was to 1821 Polk Avenue near Sibley. Sibley Fire Chief Ken Huls says a farmer was burning some tree debris and the wind picked up and blew the fire into a tall pasture and burned into a corn stalk field. He says the end rows caught on fire and it burned three acres of pasture. Firefighters were on the scene for about an hour.

On Sunday, about 1:40 p.m., the George Fire Department was called out to 4610 240th Street for a ditch on fire. Assistant Fire Chief Josh Eben reports that someone had been burning a burning pile in the ditch and it got away from them and started burning the ditch. He says it was a small fire and was taken care of in about five minutes.

The Ocheyedan firefighters were called out to a grass fire on Sunday afternoon about 4:00 p.m. That fire was reported at 1636 Tyler Avenue. Fire Chief Dan Hartwig says the cause of the fire is undetermined, but someone had been burning tree debris in the area. He says they put out the fire and were returning to the station in 20 minutes.
