Fire Destroys Farm Building North of Rock Rapids

Rock Rapids, Iowa — An outbuilding was destroyed in a fire on Sunday, July 9, 2023, near Rock Rapids.

According to Ellsworth, Minnesota Fire Chief Terry De Beer, the fire was in Ellsworth’s district. He says at about 12:30 p.m., the Ellsworth Fire Department was called to the report of two buildings on fire at 261 160th Avenue, about six miles north of Rock Rapids, or about a mile and a half north of the State Line Church.

The chief says the fire department saw one building fully engulfed and a second on fire as they approached the scene.

De Beer says no injuries were reported.

The fire department was assisted by the Luverne and Rock Rapids fire departments and both Rock and Lyon County Ambulance squads.

He says the cause of the fire is undetermined.

Chief De Beer reports that one building and its contents were totaled and the other received light damage. He says there were several old tires stored in the building, which were all destroyed, but the homeowner was able to remove most of the items of value from the building before they could be destroyed.

He says the firefighters who responded were on the scene for about four hours.
