Five-Year-Old Taken To Hospital After Being Struck By Car

Sioux Center, Iowa– A five-year-old boy was taken to the hospital after being struck by a car in Sioux Center on Friday, April 19, 2024.

The Sioux Center Police Department reports that at about 7:45 a.m., 18-year-old Kenneth Hulstein of Maurice was driving a 2010 Ford eastbound on 10th Street Southeast, at the 2nd Avenue Southeast intersection in Sioux Center. They tell us that a 5-year-old boy was walking southbound on the crosswalk on the east side of the intersection.

The report says that Hulstein advised that he did stop for the stop sign, but that the morning sun was obstructing his vision as he entered through the intersection. Hulstein struck the pedestrian with the front passenger side of his car.

The Sioux Center Ambulance took the boy to Sioux Center Health Hospital.

Hulstein was charged with failure to yield to a pedestrian.

Our Sioux Center reporter indicates that that part of the street has a posted pedestrian crossing sign, but no marked crosswalk on the road. They also tell us that the child received only minor abrasions.
