Friday House Fire Causes Damage To Sutherland Home

Calumet, Iowa — A house was damaged in a fire on Friday, March 6, 2020, in Calumet.

According to Former Calumet Fire Chief Steve Loshman, about 12:10 p.m., the Calumet Fire Department was called to the report of a house fire at 319 South Morse Avenue in Calumet.

The former chief says the fire department saw flames coming out of the kitchen window as they approached the scene.

According to Loshman, a candle had been left lit near the kitchen sink on the counter. He says a curtain likely caught flame first. He says no one was home. A passerby heard the smoke alarm and saw flames coming from the window, so he called 911.

Loshman says the fire was contained to the kitchen, but it had burned for a while because the house was full of smoke. He says there was a lot of smoke damage.

Former Chief Loshman says no injuries were reported. Two cats were feared to have perished in the fire, but both cats were later found unharmed.

The fire department was assisted by Sutherland Fire Department.

He says the 6 or 7 firefighters who responded were on the scene an hour and a half.
