Hog Barn Damaged, A Few Pigs Lost In Fire

Hospers, Iowa — A hog barn was damaged and some feeder pigs were lost in a fire on Sunday, May 26, 2019, near Hospers.

According to Hospers Fire Chief Jason Overmole, about 5:00 p.m., the Hospers Fire Department was called to the report of a hog barn fire at 3668 Kiwi Avenue, two miles west and three and a half north of Hospers.

The chief says the fire department saw smoke coming from the middle barn of three as they approached the scene. He says they used water and pulled off the roof and outside wall of the building to check for fire above the ceiling and in the wall.

Overmole says a few feeder pigs were lost in the blaze.

He says they asked for Boyden firefighters to be paged while they were en route to the fire. According to Overmole, they also asked for Sheldon firefighters to respond with water and additional personnel.

He says the cause of the fire appeared to be a malfunctioning fan.

Chief Overmole reports that there was minimal damage because it was limited to just the area near the fan.

He says the 17 firefighters who responded were on scene for about an hour.
