Inwood Firefighters Help Canton Firefighters Extinguish House Fire

Canton, South Dakota — A house was damaged in a fire on Monday, December 6, 2021, in Canton, South Dakota, and firefighters from Inwood and two other towns also responded.

According to Canton, South Dakota Fire Chief Nate Laubach, about 10:30 a.m., the Canton Fire Department was called to the report of a structure fire at a home behind Casey’s on Highway 18 in Canton.

The chief says the fire department saw fire racing up the side of the house as they approached the scene. He says that caught the peak on fire, so they were already “behind the 8 ball” when they arrived. Laubach says they called for help from the Inwood, Harrisburg, and Worthing fire departments. While they waited, he says they mounted an exterior attack, as they didn’t have enough personnel to do a RIT team with just the Canton firefighters. After the backup showed up, he says they also mounted an interior attack.

Laubach says an older son was at home, and he jumped from a second-floor window and escaped the fire. He tells us the occupants will be living with family, as the house sustained major damage and is not liveable at this time.

He says the fire appeared to have started in the kitchen but the cause is undetermined at this time.

He says the firefighters who responded were on the scene until 5 p.m., spending over six hours fighting the fire.
