Kansas City Man Dead After Car Chase

Police lightbar chaseNorthwest Iowa — A 19-year old Kansas City man is dead after leading law enforcement on a pursuit last week in northwest Iowa.

According to a report from the Emmet County Sheriff’s Office, this past Wednesday, a Dickinson County Sheriff’s Deputy observed a subject driving a vehicle that had been previously reported as stolen out of Sac County. The deputy attempted to initiate a traffic stop, but the vehicle fled.

Authorities say the pursuit led into rural Emmet County at high speeds, where the deputy lost sight of the vehicle due to poor road conditions. The driver reportedly drove off the road into a ditch and fled into a field.

Upon finding the abandoned vehicle, authorities say the deputy followed the driver’s tracks into the field where he found the body of the driver, who authorities identify as Alexander Lee Graves, deceased, with a handgun beside him.

Deputies say Graves’ body was transported to Ankeny, where an autopsy was performed by the Iowa Office of the State Medical Examiner.  At this time, the manner of death is believed to be suicide.

The Emmet County Sheriff’s Office, Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office, and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation continue to investigate the incident.
