Kids’ Mischief Believed Responsible For Bale Fire On Edge Of Orange City

Orange City, Iowa — Mischievous kids are thought to be responsible for a bale on fire on Tuesday, June 28, 2022, on the outskirts of Orange City.

According to Orange City Fire Chief Denny Vander Wel, at about 10:50 p.m., the Orange City Fire Department was called to the report of a hay bale on fire near 1510 Juneau Place Southeast, in far southeast Orange City.

The chief says the fire department saw the bale on fire as they approached the scene. He says they broke the bale apart and put it out with water.

Vander Wel says no injuries were reported.

He says that according to some witnesses, they saw a group of kids vacating the area after the fire started.

Chief Vander Wel reports that damage was basically limited to the bale itself. He says it was near Hillcrest Apartments but was far enough away so it wasn’t a hazard.

He says the firefighters who responded were on the scene for about 45 minutes.
