Ocheyedan Hog Barn Saved By Farmer, Fire Department

Ocheyedan, Iowa — A recent fire call in the Ocheyedan district could have turned out much worse.

That from Ocheyedan Fire Department Chief Dan Hartwig.

He says they had a call to a “hog barn fire” on Friday morning, February 9th. The call came in just before 7:30 in the morning.

But Hartwig says when they got there, they talked to the farmer who told them that he could smell smoke. He says they checked out a couple of hot spots with their equipment and pulled a couple of pieces of tin off of the wall. Hartwig says they didn’t even get out their hoses, and just doused the smoldering spots with a garden hose.

Hartwig says they kind of “lucked out on the deal.”

Hartwig says the cause is undetermined as there was no wiring or heating ducts in that area of the wall. He says the firefighters were there for 15 to 20 minutes.
