Le Mars, Iowa– An Oyens man was taken to a hospital after a collision with a train near Le Mars on Tuesday, August 4, 2026.
The Plymouth County Sheriff’s Office reports that at about 7:40 p.m., 25-year-old Joshua Kelly of Oyens was driving a 2012 Ram pickup eastbound on 150th Street, three miles northwest of Le Mars. They tell us that a BNSF train was northbound on the BNSF tracks near the crossing.
The report says that the train collided with the pickup at the crossing. The pickup then entered the north ditch and rolled an unknown number of times before coming to rest upside down. Kelly was not wearing a seatbelt at the time and was ejected.
An ambulance took Kelly to Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars.
The BNSF crew reported no injuries.
Kelly’s Ram pickup sustained $12,000 in damages, which totaled the vehicle, and the BNSF locomotive sustained about $4,500 in damages.
The Plymouth County Sheriff’s Office tells us their officers responded along with the Le Mars Police Department, Le Mars Fire-Rescue, Iowa State Patrol, Stockton Towing, and the Plymouth County Secondary Roads Department.
The case remains under investigation with possible charges.
