Sioux Center Man Faces Felony, Misdemeanor Charges After Alleged Assault On Officer

Sioux Center, Iowa — A Sioux Center man has been arrested on felony OWI, assault, and other charges after a traffic stop in Sioux Center.

According to a criminal complaint filed with the Sioux County Clerk of Court’s Office by the Sioux Center Police Department, 26-year-old Adelso Chavez Chavez of Sioux Center is accused of driving under the influence and assaulting an officer. He was arrested on Sunday.

In his statement, the officer says the incident started when the officer pulled over to follow Chavez Chavez. He says that’s when Chavez Chavez made an illegal U-turn and took off at a high rate of speed. The officer says he stopped at a home and ran inside. The officer says Chavez Chavez attempted to barricade the door. The officer attempted to force the door, and a fight ensued.

Chavez Chavez was charged with operating while intoxicated, third or subsequent offense, a class D felony. If convicted, Chavez Chavez could face up to five years in prison. He also faces misdemeanor charges of assaulting an officer, interference with official acts, driving while revoked, driving without ignition interlock, driving while suspended, driving without a license, and the turning violation.

He faces a preliminary hearing on Tuesday, December 12th.

At last report, Chavez Chavez remained in the Sioux County Jail in Orange City in lieu of a $5000 personal recognizance bond.
