Thieves Attempt To Steal Sibley State Bank ATM

Sibley, Iowa — An Osceola County Deputy came upon a strange sight early on Thursday morning, May 23rd.

Osceola County Sheriff Kevin Wolmuth tells us the deputy found a pickup, still running, with a chain tied to it — and the other end was tied to a Sibley State Bank ATM on the bank’s property. But there was nary a trace of the people who attempted to abscond with the cash machine.

Wollmuth says there was security camera footage that showed the attempted theft occurred about 3:10 a.m., but it wasn’t of very much use as the perpetrators were all wearing ski masks and hoodies, so their identities could not be ascertained. Wollmuth says he doesn’t even know their races or genders.

The preliminary investigation shows that the pickup was one that had been stolen from the Cooperative Farmers Elevator location in Sibley.

The Sheriff says the perpetrators were successful in pulling the ATM off of its base, but they then went back to look at the ATM, and shortly thereafter, took off running to a different car, in which they left the scene. He speculates they decided there was no way they were going to be able to load the ATM into the pickup, so they abandoned the idea.

Wollmuth says he wishes he had more information to pass along to help the public help them, but at this point, that’s all they really have to go on.

If you do have any information that might help in the ongoing investigation, you are asked to contact the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office in Sibley.
