Worthington Man Dies In Accident West Of Sheldon

Sheldon, Iowa– A Worthington, MN has died as the result of an accident near Sheldon on Monday, October 17, 2022.

The Iowa State Patrol reports that at about 6:20 a.m., 17-year-old Manuel Garcia Calachij of Worthington, MN was driving a 2006 Ford Focus westbound on Highway 18, near Northwest Iowa Community College west of Sheldon. They tell us that 54-year-old Kris Marra of Sioux Center was eastbound on 18 in a 2016 Peterbilt semi.

The report says that Garcia Calachij crossed the center line and struck the Marra semi head-on. Garcia Calachij’s Ford ended up on the north shoulder facing northwest and the semi continued eastbound and became jack-knifed across both lanes of traffic. All four occupants of the Ford were trapped.

Ambulances took all four to Sanford Sheldon. The report says 44-year-old Samuel Garcia Ruiz died in the accident. He was not wearing a seatbelt. It appears that some or all of the remaining teenage victims were flown to Sioux Falls.

The trooper says that at last report, Garcia Calachij remained in critical condition with life-threatening injuries. The trooper says the two female passengers remained in serious condition at that time.

Seasons Center Receives Grant

Sioux Center, Iowa – The Sioux Center Community Foundation has awarded Seasons Center with a $1,000 grant to update the waiting
