Car Destroyed In Fire Near Ocheyedan

Ocheyedan, Iowa — A car was destroyed in a fire early on Saturday near Ocheyedan.

According to Ocheyedan Fire Chief Dan Hartwig, at about 3:20 a.m., the Ocheyedan Fire Department was called to the report of a car on fire at 1172 Van Buren Avenue, four and a half miles north of Ocheyedan and a mile and a half east.

The chief says the fire department saw the car fully engulfed as they approached the scene, and they extinguished the blaze.

Hartwig says no injuries were reported.

He says the cause of the fire is officially undetermined but was believed to be electrical in nature.

Chief Hartwig reports the vehicle was totaled in the blaze.

He says the firefighters who responded were on the scene for about half an hour.

Interestingly enough, the Ocheyedan firefighters had been called out on Friday evening for a car fire right on Main Street in Ocheyedan, but by the time they got to that fire, it had been put out with a fire extinguisher.

In other recent fire calls, the George Fire Department was called to a mile west of George on A34 for a field fire at about 5:50 p.m. on Friday. Assistant Fire Chief Josh Eben says a farmer had been burning a tree pile on the edge of the field when embers blew into some standing cornstalks and started them on fire. He says between five and six acres burned and firefighters had it taken care of within about 20 minutes.

The Orange City Fire Department was called to a smell of smoke in a building at MOC/Floyd Valley High School about 6:20 on Monday morning. But Fire Chief Denny Vander Wel says the cause of this one is going to remain a mystery unless they somehow find more information. He says the smell smelled like burning dust, like the first time you turn on a furnace in the fall. But, he says the maintenance staff told him that they have only hot water heat, which doesn’t smell like that. They told the chief there was a light haze of smoke, but it didn’t cause any smoke alarms to go off. He says they’ll keep an eye on the situation.
