Correcting Wrong-Way Driving On Highway 60 Results In Injury Accident

Ashton, Iowa– A Bellevue, Nebraska woman and a Sioux Center woman were taken to the hospital after an accident near Ashton on Sunday evening, July 24, 2022.

The O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office reports that about 9:40 p.m., 21-year-old Celia Chilel Chavez of Bellevue, Nebraska was driving a 2007 Nissan SUV northbound in the southbound lanes of Highway 60, near Northwest Boulevard, about a quarter of a mile south of the county line. They tell us that 52-year-old Jodi Vogel of Sioux Center was southbound on 60 in a 2014 Honda SUV.

The report says that several people stopped and signaled Chilel Chavez that she was going the wrong way. Chilel Chavez did a u-turn and then was facing south in the southbound lanes, parked on the right shoulder of the road. Chilel Chavez turned left from the right shoulder and attempted to cross both south bound lanes of traffic, but turned right in front of Vogel. Vogel’s SUV rolled approximately six times and came to rest on its roof.

The Ashton Ambulance took both Chilel Chavez and Vogel to Sanford Sheldon Hospital.

Chilel Chavez’s Nissan SUV sustained $4,000 in damages, and Vogel’s Honda SUV sustained $15,000 in damages.

Chilel Chavez was charged with failure to yield to a passing vehicle, careless driving, and no valid driver’s license.
