Fire Claims Family’s Home In Rural Rock Rapids

Rock Rapids, Iowa — A family’s house was destroyed in a fire on Monday, February 7, 2022, near Rock Rapids.

According to Rock Rapids Fire Second Assistant Chief Tanner Vogl, about 4:40 a.m., the Rock Rapids Fire Department was called to the report of a house fire at 2958 210th Street, five miles south and a mile and a half west of Rock Rapids or a mile and a half west of Lakewood Corner.

Second Assistant Chief Vogl says no injuries were reported as everyone was out of the home by the time the firefighters arrived.

Vogl tells us the fire department was assisted by the Alvord Fire Department. The Doon, Lester, and George fire departments all provided tankers of water, and the Sioux Center Fire Department also came up with their aerial truck. Sioux Center is over 20 miles from the fire scene.

He says the cause of the fire is under investigation at this time, and that the home is totaled and its occupants are displaced.

He says the firefighters who responded were on the scene for five to six hours. He says Lyon County Sheriff deputies and EMTs from the Lyon County Ambulance Squad also assisted at the scene.

A couple of days earlier, the Rock VALLEY Fire Department was called out to a report of smoke in a mobile home at 605 10th Street in Rock Valley, about 10 a.m.

Rock Valley Fire Chief Brent Eshuis says it was lucky that there was someone home at the time because their investigation found out that the wires that supplied the electric water heater had burned. He says it created some smoke, which is how it was discovered. He says had no one been home it would have been a different story.

Chief Eshuis tells us they didn’t need to spray any water. They just ventilated the mobile home. The wiring will need to be investigated and replaced.
