Rock Valley Man Arrested For Eluding, OWI & More

Doon, Iowa — A Rock Valley man was arrested late Saturday night after allegedly leading a Lyon County Deputy on a brief chase.

According to court records, shortly before midnight Saturday night, a Lyon County Deputy allegedly observed a pickup truck fail to stop for the stop sign at the intersection of 260th Street and Garfield Avenue, at the southwest edge of Doon, then turn south onto Garfield Avenue. According to the deputy, he attempted to pull the truck over, but instead the vehicle fled with the deputy in hot pursuit. Authorities say the pursuit lasted less than two miles before the vehicle pulled into an acreage in the 2700 mile of Garfield Avenue and stopped.

According to court records, the deputy reportedly stated that the driver of the pickup had been having trouble maintaining his lane during the brief pursuit, and once stopped, the deputy said the driver, who authorities identify as 35-year-old Justin Mark VanTilburg, exhibited signs of alcohol impairment. Deputies say VanTilburg refused all field sobriety tests and also refused a chemical test.

VanTilburg was placed under arrest and transported to the Lyon County Jail in Rock Rapids. He faces a charge of Eluding, a Class D Felony; 1st Offense OWI; having an Open Container of Alcohol in his vehicle; Failure to Obey a Stop Sign; and Driving on the Wrong Side of a Two-Way Highway. It was also reportedly discovered that VanTilburg had a warrant for his arrest out of Osceola County.
